Pilot & Navigator Briefing

Airports to be Used During Western Canada SAREx

St Andrews Airport CYAV
This is the primary base for landplanes during the exercise. Hangar storage is not available. St Andrews is class "D" airspace with a 5 nautical mile radius during tower operation, 8 am to 10 pm CDT. Pilots take care to avoid the Winnipeg control zone, 7 nm diameter from surface to 2,000' ASL, and 12 nm diameter from 2,000' to 3,000' ASL. VFR traffic may not be permitted in Winnipeg terminal airspace, 22 nm radius, 3,000' to 12,500' ASL.

There are three restricted areas north of the city of Winnipeg.

Aircraft parking is available along the east side of the CASARA Provincial Training Centre building, south of taxiway "E" and west of taxiway "C".  Crews should bring aircraft tie-downs. Aircraft marshallers will be available during high traffic times. Fuel (100LL) is available from Harv's Air Service and from Winnipeg Aviation.

There is a restaurant, open to 3 pm Monday - Friday, 2 pm Saturdays, closed Sundays, in the Harv's Air Service building.

Gimli CYGM
There is parachute and glider activity at the airport. Fly right hand circuits for runway 33. The town is 2 miles away, and transportation is unlikely to be available.

Lac du Bonnet CYAX
The runway is surrounded by trees which may create a wind gradient at low altitude. Fuel is available, but there are no other services. The town is 3 miles away, and transportation is unlikely to be available. The Lac du Bonnet water aerodrome is adjacent to the landplane parking area.

Steinbach North CJB3
This airport is located at the northeast end of the city of Steinbach. There is busy training airport, Steinbach South, at the south end of Steinbach. Training traffic mostly remains west and south of the city. There is parachute activity at Steinbach North. Fly right hand circuits for runway 32. There is a shopping centre within walking distance of the airport.

Other Information

Pilots should fuel their aircraft to provide three hours endurance during the exercise, to provide flexibility in assigning crews. Crew members will be swapped between aircraft to maximise cross training.

Weather briefings will be available in house or by calling Winnipeg Flight Service Station at 1-866-WX-BRIEF (992-7433).
